Who is a Feagin Scholar?

Feagin Leadership Scholars are a talented and diverse group of individuals. They include fellows, residents, and medical students.

The Feagin Scholars participate in a ten-month curriculum that includes:

  • Navigation of difficult presence and conversations

  • Development of strong leadership qualities

  • Individual leadership style and goals

  • Emotional intelligence

  • Negotiation skills

  • Teamwork skills

  • Mentoring skills

How to Apply

Our Application Process

Applications are open to rising third-year medical students, MD/Ph.D. students, residents, and fellows. Medical students will need faculty mentor approval to participate in the program. Applications are accepted annually in the summer.

The following are the items to be included in your application packet:

  • 1-page resume or CV (Yes, we really mean one page. Condense and summarize as needed.)

  • 2 letters of recommendation

    • 1 from a faculty member (It can be, but does not have to be, a MD.)

    • 1 from another individual (not a family member)

  • 1-page essay addressing the following questions:

    • "What will you contribute to the Feagin Leadership Program?"

    • "What do you expect to get out of your experience in the program?"

Please submit your application in PDF format to Stacey Herrera at stacey.herrera@duke.edu with the subject line: "2024 Feagin Application." Application packets MUST be submitted as one PDF attachment to your email.

Important Dates for 2024-2025:

  • June 1 - Application submission opens

  • June 30 (midnight) - Application submission closes at midnight

  • August 1 - Announcement of the 2024-2025 Feagin Leadership Scholars

  • SESSION DATES for 2024-2025

    • Session 1 - September 6-7, 2024 (Friday all day, Saturday half day)

    • Session 2 - October 4-6, 2024 (3-day event in Annapolis, MD)

    • Session 3 - December 6, 2024 (half-day event on Friday afternoon)

    • Session 4 - January 10, 2025 (half-day event on Friday afternoon)

    • Session 5 - February 21, 20205 (half-day event on Friday afternoon)

    • Session 6 - April 4, 2025 (3-hour session to include lunch and team time)

    • Feagin Leadership Forum - May 16-17, 2025

    • Feagin Scholars Graduation - May 18, 2025

      Please confirm your availability for these dates. 100% attendance is expected. If you have any other commitments during these dates PLEASE discuss them with Joe Doty before applying.
