Our Mission

To provide a transformational learning experience that develops effective, ethical leaders who positively influence healthcare.

The Feagin Leadership Program creates a unique opportunity for the exploration of ethical leadership principles that resonate across multiple disciplines, including medicine, military, academia, athletics and business.

Who We Are

The Feagin Leadership Program was created to honor John A. Feagin, Jr., M.D., Duke University Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Feagin's dedication to developing ethical leaders of character is the inspiration for this effort. Our program benefits leadership education within the Duke medical community.

What We Do

The Scholars Program engages Duke medical school students, residents, and fellows in their personal leadership journeys. The program includes six leadership sessions, individual executive coaching, monthly team meetings/coaching, attendance at the annual Feagin Leadership Forum, and the creation of a leadership project focused on improving healthcare and/or medical education.

Our Story

Since its inception in 2008, the Feagin Leadership Program has continued to grow and evolve through its purpose to improve leadership training within medical education and healthcare.

Our Why

“We need to fix medicine. This starts with physicians accepting that they are the leaders who can transform healthcare from a solely clinical model to a team-based, patient-centered, humanitarian one. Educating and empowering our future physicians to become change-makers and responsible leaders should be the primary focus of our medical schools and training programs.”

—Dean Taylor. M.D., Chairman, Feagin Leadership Program

“It is essential to recognize and understand ‘who’ you are, ‘what’ you do, ‘when and where’ you do it, and ‘how’ you do it.”
